The work of all together 4 years (2009-2012) – the triptych “Mystical Birds of Ancient Kuzhebar†is finished now.
It is pyrography on wood with carved elements
Kuzhebarian tales say about three mystical birds, who are providers of different power-sorces. For mortals, however, the birds were dangerous and indifferent at the same time. One of them symbolizes darkness, another light and the third one wisdom.
Kuzhebarian people believed that each of these birds come to each person one time a life and everybody has to choose with which of them to be connected. People give their emotions, intentions and thoughts like food to the birds and birds provide them a power they have. One gives the power to complain or to be angry, another the power to be joyful and to laugh, and the third one provides access to wisdom and omniscience.

Pyrography on wood, 21×30 cm, Julia Surba 2012
First they were the drawings – two versions for the logo for Bernard Gilmartin´s pyrography website, but then Julia decided to make the pyrographic pictures out of them. Here you can see the result.
And here is one of the legend versions about four children of Lir, who were turned with magic into swans. These swans kept the possibility to speak and to produce beautiful music.

Khubonannuh is a protecting spirit of a small island in Gulf of Siam of the South China Sea.
“Khubonannuhâ€, Julia Surba 2012
Pyrography on birch wood, diameter 30cm
The legends say that this spirit is very big and its body enrings the island like a snake. The head of Khubanannuh is on the western part of the… island and its tail goes to the sea, creating boarders of its posessions – the protected living zone for people, animals and plants. In the morning one can see strange traces on the sand of the seashore. People say it is Khubanannuh coming out of the sea to check its land.
Khubanannuh is very kind to all beengs of the island but can be very dangerous for those who come with bad intentions. Last time Khubonnanuh has a new duty – to protect the island against commercial tourism and the spirit seems to be really competent in it.:)
